Getting legally married in FranceWhen coming from abroad

November 3, 2026·Inspirations

It is often the first question asked by our American, British, or Middle Eastern couples: can you legally marry in France? The answer is yes, under certain conditions. Here, simply, is what French law stipulates, and why so many couples ultimately choose another path, just as beautiful.

Please note: this guide is provided for informational purposes. Regulations may evolve, and only the relevant town hall confirms the admissibility of an application.

The fundamental rule: a connection to the municipality.

In France, the civil wedding is celebrated at the town hall by a registrar. To be married in a given municipality, a connection to it is required:

  • one of the future spouses maintains their domicile there, or has continuously resided there for at least one month as of the date of publication of the banns;
  • ...or where one of the couple’s parents is domiciled. This provides a precious opportunity for families who own a home in France.

Should none of these ties exist, a civil marriage is not possible in mainland France. It remains possible in select overseas collectivities, such as Saint-Barthélemy or French Polynesia.

Timelines

The marriage file must be submitted to the town hall well in advance: in practice, at least one month and ten days prior to the ceremony, and often even earlier. The banns are then published for ten days. For foreign couples, the civil registrar may also request a preliminary interview with the future spouses, sometimes conducted by consular authorities.

The documents

While each town hall specifies its own list, you should generally plan to provide:

  • recent birth certificates, legalized or apostilled, and translated by a sworn translator;
  • a certificate of custom and a certificate of single status, issued by the authorities of the country of origin;
  • identity documents and proof of residence;
  • information regarding the witnesses;
  • if applicable, a prenuptial agreement.

If the couple does not speak French, the ceremony takes place in the presence of an interpreter.

The religious ceremony

In France, a religious ceremony cannot be celebrated prior to the civil marriage. Couples wishing to hold a religious ceremony must therefore first be married at the town hall, or have already been legally married in their home country.

The solution chosen by most couples

Many international couples marry legally at home, in an intimate setting, a few days or weeks prior, then celebrate a symbolic ceremony in France. It carries no legal weight, but it offers complete freedom: the venue (villa, beach, vineyards, garden), the time (sunset rather than town hall hours), the language, the officiant, the vows, and the ritual. For the guests, nothing sets it apart from a wedding, except that it is a truer reflection of who you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can an American couple legally marry in France? Yes, if one of the spouses has their domicile or has resided in the municipality for at least one month, or if one of their parents is domiciled there.
  • What if our parents own a home in France? It is one of the simplest avenues: the wedding can be celebrated in the municipality where the parent resides.
  • Can we get married in a church without a civil ceremony? No, in France, the civil wedding must precede any religious ceremony.
  • Is a symbolic ceremony less moving? Quite the opposite. Freed from administrative constraints, it is often far more personal.

The law, then freedom.

Getting married in France requires a touch of administrative patience, or a simple choice: the law at home, the emotion here. In both cases, we accompany you through every step. With all my elegance, Sandrine Arnould — Founder, Luxury Events Agency
